DOTS (mnemonic)
DOTS is a mnemonic device used in emergency medicine, for the purpose of aiding first responders in assessing the condition of trauma patients.[1] It is generally used by individuals with minimal medical training. Those with higher levels of training most often will use DCAP-BTLS.
Meaning
- D - Deformities; Usually signifying a broken bone.[1]
- O - Open Wounds; Broken skin, often accompanied by bleeding.[1]
- T - Tenderness; Sensitivity or pain expressed by the patient when the problem area is touched.[1]
- S - Swelling; Caused by accumulation of fluids within the body.[1]
